Three BPS Seniors Receive Hispanic League Scholarship

Alicia Granto-Estenoz, Spanish Teacher at Bennet HS and longtime member of the Hispanic Women's League (HWL) in Buffalo, is proud to announce that three high school seniors from the Buffalo Public Schools that have won the 2011 HWL Incentive Scholarships offered by the Hispanic Women's League. 

The three enterprising seniors are all from the Buffalo Public Schools.  Claribel Quiles, Bennett High School; Gabriel Burgos-Nieves, Emerson School of Hospitality; and Nikolas Albarran, City Honors School; have dedicated themselves to their school work and their future goals and are the recipients of the 2011 Incentive Scholarship from the Hispanic Women's League of Buffalo, NY. 

Quiles and Burgos-Nieves are this year’s salutatorians at their respective schools.

Burgard High School Celebrates High Achievers

Burgard High School Celebrates High Achievers

Fifty-eight Burgard High School honor and merit roll students achieved averages of 85 and better during the 3rd quarter marking period. The scholars were treated to a continental breakfast and awarded certificates that acknowledge their accomplishments.   

In a special program, the dedicated students were welcomed by fellow student, Tatyana Thomas, followed by a congratulatory message by Principal Brian Wiesinger. 

Several staff members contributed refreshments for the event, as did Dunkin Donuts and Wegmans.  A raffle was then held by lottery so that a few lucky scholars could win either a Barnes and Nobles gift card or an MP3 player.

The Buffalo Public Schools Adult Education Division is pleased to announce that Associate Superintendent for Educational Services, Will Keresztes, was awarded the New York Association for Continuing/Community Education (NYACCE) Service Award 2011.  The distinguished honor is a single statewide award for individual who makes outstanding contributions to Adult Education.  The award was presented at the 60th annual NYACCE conference in Saratoga Springs, NY at its recent recognition ceremony, held in Saratoga Springs, NY, on May 2.

ART Community Dialog:  The Voices of Western New York Artists

In keeping with the mission statement of community support, American Repertory Theater of Western New York has created a website and Facebook Page dedicated to opening up online forums to discuss issues facing WNY Artists. This new Website Public Forum page is entitled "The Voices of Western New York Artists."

These public forums are designed for all members of WNY Cultural Groups, media, individual artists and anyone with an opinion that faces Artists in Western New York.

Those visiting The Voices of WNY Artists website and the Facebook page are encouraged to post opinions, offer links to blogs & websites, announce upcoming shows and, most importantly, utilize their voices for the sole purposes of creating dialog and being heard.

100 Cities, One Night for Autism in Buffalo May 12

Celebrating “100 Cities, One Night For Autism”, the critically-acclaimed film, "Wretches and Jabberers", will play for a one night limited engagement in Buffalo on Thursday, May 12th at 7:30pm at Dipson Amherst Theatre 3500 Main Street.


Directed by Academy Award®-winner Gerardine Wurzburg, the feature documentary follows two men with autism, Tracy Thresher and Larry Bissonnette, who embark on a global quest to change attitudes about disability, intelligence and communication.

Buffalo State Student Elected President of SUNY Student Assembly

Kaitlyn Beachner, a graduate student in the Student Personnel Administration Department at Buffalo State College, has been elected president of the SUNY Student Assembly.

Student leaders from across the SUNY system convened last month at the SUNY Student Assembly Conference to elect their leadership team for the 2011-12 academic year. Beachner will serve as president of the assembly for a 12-month term starting on June 1, 2011. She will be the first Buffalo State student to hold the position.

“I cannot wait to take office on June 1 and begin representing the more than 467,000 students on our campuses,” said Beachner. “I have always had a passion for student government and standing up for my peers.”

Among her responsibilities are full voting privileges as a student representative with the SUNY Board of Trustees.

Starlight Studio: BlazeVOX [Books]: Genesis

On June 3, 2011, Starlight Studio and Art Gallery, The Learning Disabilities Association of Western New York, in conjunction with BlazeVOX [Books] present: "Genesis."

Starlight's Genesis, an Anthology of the Starlight Gallery edited by Katherine Loewen is Starlight Studio's first published book of poetry. The anthology will be released on Friday June 3, 2011 as a book launch event at Starlight Studio and Art Gallery, 340 Delaware Avenue, Buffalo, NY from 7-10 pm.

This FREE event will feature Hutchinson Central Technical High School’s gypsy jazz guitar ensemble, The Six String Circus, Buffalo's own original jazz group, The Three Headed Giant, poetry readings, and refreshments.The book will be available to purchase for $20 and the poets will be there to autograph anthologies.
