Bird Island Pier to Get Makeover | News

BUFFALO, NY - The Bird Island Pier is getting a $750,000 makeover thanks to a grant from the Niagara River Greenway Commission.

A portion of the more than 100-year-old structure was closed in 2010 due to structural damage from exposure to swift river currents and taking the full brunt of weather off of Lake Erie year in and out.

"The Bird Island Pier is an important part of historic Broderick Park and popular with the public," said Mayor Brown. "We look forward to re-opening the recreational walkway so people can fish, stroll, or enjoy a spectacular view of the river and city skyline."

Brown and Deputy Parks Commissioner Andrew Rabb said Monday that city engineers are currently working out an agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to perform the work, which will include the placement of large concrete blocks in unstable areas.

Repairs to the pier coincide with a $1.5 million city-funded revitalization of Broderick Park at the southern tip of Squaw Island. The final public meeting on the proposed Master Plan for the park is scheduled for Thursday, July 12, 6 to 8 p.m., at the Rich Product's Atrium.
