April 9 Mortgage Check-Up Provides Relief to Homeowners

Though court filings for foreclosure in Western New York are low, a report from the New York State Banking Department suggests the number of homeowners in need of housing advocacy could as much as double over the next year. A Mortgage Check-Up event on Saturday, April 9 will provide Western New York homeowners worried about their mortgages with a quick, easy and confidential way to address their concerns.

Counselors and lawyers will consult homeowners privately from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the FLARE office at 307 Leroy Ave.

3rd Annual BunnyFest at Choco-Logo Benefits Roswell Park

Choco-Logo Confectionery Design, 141 Broadway in Buffalo, will host the third annual BunnyFest on Saturday, April 16 from 10am to 3pm. Tickets are $5 per child and accompanying adults are free! Ticket sale proceeds benefit Pastoral Care for patients at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

Visiting bunnies will learn how to make their own chocolate bunnies and chocolate nests and will take a behind-the-scenes tour of the working chocolate factory.  Facepainting and a visit with the Easter Bunny (bring your own camera) and other chocolatey-good surprises make this a fun activity.

Choco-Logo's artisan chocolates will also be for sale, featuring artwork created by Roswell's patient artists with proceeds benefit The Paint Box Project.

Jericho Road Ministries Holding Baby Furniture Drive

Jericho Road Ministries always takes an active role in the West Side Community. Now they have announced in partnership with the Junior League of Buffalo a Baby Furniture Drive. The drive is asking the public for donations of cribs, car-seats, and "pack-and-plays" for children.

Donated items will go to support at-risk or impoverished mothers on the West Side. Items can be donated through April 2nd at Jericho Road Ministries, 184 Barton Street or at the Junior League of Buffalo's Headquarters at 45 Elmwood Avenue.

Jericho Road is only accepting the items listed above and all donations are tax-deductible.

Food Express Truck Springs In With a Tractor Trailer of Food

Buffalo, NY - March 18, 2011 - This month The Food Express Truck will begin making deliveries to the 14201 Lower West Side of Buffalo community. Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church in conjunction with the Food Bank of WNY, The Belle Center and Buffalo AmeriCorps will provide supplemental food distribution to hundreds of Buffalo community members outside of Holy Cross Church from a tractor trailer filled with goods.

This monthly distribution will begin at 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 25th, 2011. In order for community members to receive food at this distribution they must reside in the 14201 area code and provide picture identification. Community members are encouraged to bring bags and/or boxes to carry their food.

Students and families in the Parent Child-Home Program at The Belle Center enjoyed an evening of free ice cream, books & fun family activities at its recent ice cream social event!

The Belle Center is pressing forward to equip the diverse, low-socioeconomic children and their families on the Lower West Side of Buffalo with the tools needed for success in school and beyond through its NEW Parent-Child Home Program.

Buffalo State’s Professional Development School Consortium Honored for "Exemplary Achievement"
The 2011 Award for Exemplary Professional Development School Achievement has been awarded to the Buffalo State College Professional Development School (PDS) Consortium by the National Association for Professional Development Schools (NAPDS).

Today, 45 schools throughout Western New York belong to the consortium, including 21 schools in the city of Buffalo, 18 of which are Buffalo Public Schools. The purpose of the PDS is to establish a collaboration of college faculty members, teachers, and administrators in the participating schools; teacher candidates studying at Buffalo State; and the young students in the schools. Together, they develop highly qualified teachers; provide professional development to practicing teachers, administrators, and professors; improve the learning of young students; and conduct research to continuously improve learning outcomes for students as well as competencies among practitioners.

Pittie Party to Benefit Black Dog, Second Chance

On Saturday, March 12, 2011, Black Dog, Second Chance will be showcasing three of their rescue dogs at Animal Outfitters, 986 Elmwood Avenue in Buffalo.  "It's a Pittie Party" will feature three pit bull mix dogs that are looking for forever homes.  They have been in Black Dog, Second Chance's care for several months due to extensive medical needs.  Each dog is now healthy, spayed or neutered, and up to date on its vaccinations.

Karly, a 12 week old puppy who recently survived parvo, will be present to raise funds for her veterinary bills.  There will be a "Karly Kissing Booth" where people can have their picture taken with her to help off-set the $3,000 in expenses that were incurred during her treatment.  Evan and Rummy, seven month old siblings, will also be available for adoption.
