DEA Plans Third National Prescription Drug Drop-Off

Residents across Western New York are being encouraged to dispose of their unused and unwanted prescription medications before they fall into the wrong hands.

Nearly three dozen sites throughout the area will host a medication drop-off day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29.

It’s the largest single day drop-off in Western New York, officials said, and the Drug Enforcement Administration is leading the effort as part of a national campaign with the support of police agencies, Kids Escaping Drugs, the University at Buffalo and D’Youville schools of pharmacy, Erie County DEP, IHA, Covanta, Catholic Health System, Kalieda Health System and West Herr Automotive Group.

A similar event held in April collected more than four tons of medications from residential homes. Western New York leads the state in collections, officials said.

The purpose behind the collections is to keep medications out of the hands of teens looking to experiment. Several state and national surveys have shown that prescription pain medications are becoming the drug of choice among teens, with most reporting taking the drugs from someone’s home. Death by overdose is the number one causes of accidental death today, surpassing car accidents for the first time since 1979, when drug overdose stats starting being tallied, officials said.

Taken as prescribed these medications can control severe pain. When abused, addiction can come quickly, sometimes ending in death.

The collection also aims to keep area waterways clean. Flushing old medications contaminate the water table and eventually drinking water, officials said.

All prescription and over-the-counter medications will be accepted, as well as needles. For a complete list of collection sites, see the flier below or  visit www.nationalprescriptiondrugdropoff.com.
